The Books We Read / Best Seller / Life of Pi by Yann Martel

I read this one six months ago so it’s not really fresh. Anyway, I was just curious to know what anyone thought of the ending. I had a conversation with a friend who thought that, let me say right now, if you haven’t read the book, stop reading this post and start reading this book. Ok she thought that the ending of the book where he tells the other story about the cook and his mother was the real story and that the story with the tiger was a made up one. I had always thought that the tiger story was the right one. There were hints that it may have been made up. One of the things to do in a life boat to pass the time was to make up stories. He said he didn’t have time to do that what with taking care of the tiger and all and trying to stay alive. But I still believe Pi floated to Mexico from the middle of the ocean in a life boat with a tiger as a companion. Let me know what you think Charlotte. Just click on the bottom where it says comment on this post.

I believe that the last part of the book was the true story and let me tell you why, because it broke my heart. Having to go through all of that, knowing that your father and your brother had drown in the boat becuase all of the survivors were in the life boat and they weren’t there. The cook was slightly mad and I don’t think that he thought he was going to live to see shore, so why stoop so low to eat human remains? I picked up on a parallel between Pi and the Cook. He let Pi kill him so easily because he could never live a normal life again after what he had done and what he had become. Pi lived in a different dimension ie. the “story”, because like the cook, he could never live a normal life again after what he did, but i don’t believe that, like the cook, he became the carnevourus creater. The cook killed and ate the officer and Pi’s mother because he was mad. Pi killed and ate the cook because of revenge. Pi’s escape from ever having to think about it and to be that was the “story”. As soon as the boat landed on civilized territory, the tiger in Pi had to leave. That part of Pi had to leave without looking back, without saying goodbye. How could a person ever live with the second story? So when he askes the investigators which story they like better he says something like “and so it goes with God” he is able to be Pi, to build a civilized life and somewhere deep down inside hope that his family were rescued by another ship and that he will meet them in this life again.

Yeah, you are probably right. That was a pretty convincing argument. When I read it I just thought that he was telling the story that everyone would have believed. It is easier to believe that he sailed in the ocean with two other people than alone with a tiger.
